The value of understanding your MBTI preferences and the preferences of people who are important in your life is eloquently stated in the following excerpt from a book called "Please Understand Me" by Marilyn Bates and David Kiersey:

"If I do not want what you want,
please try not to tell me that my want is wrong.
Or if I believe other than you,
at least pause before you correct my view.
Or if my emotion is less than yours, or more,
given the same circumstances,
try not to ask me to feel more strongly or weakly.
Of yet if I act, or fail to act, in the manner
of your design for action, let me be.
I do not, for the moment at least,
ask you to understand me.
That will come only when you are willing
to give up changing me into a copy of you.”

Isn't this the real issue of communication?  We see the world as we are not as it really is and especially not from someone's else's point of view.  So the more information we can gather about other people's personalities and communication styles, the more effective we will be as we work and live with them.

We have found that the MBTI which helps you understand your preferences (consider a preference like your preferred hand...it's the one you use the most and the other hand also is used but less frequently and more consciously) in the following areas is quite helpful to a team to learn how to communicate with each other and to work together most effectively:

Where do you get your energy?

Extraverts - Get energy from people interaction and talk out loud to think whereas Introverts get their energy internally and think things through in their head before they speak...to need to rechard their batteries after intense people interaction.

How do you take in information?

Sensors...use the five senses...see the world as it it...current reality is very important to them...they are very detail oriented versus Intuitives who see the big picture of the world...the systems, the possibilities...often imagine what it all could look like if...

How do you make decisions?

Thinkers...make decisions based on the objective view of the situation...the firm fair way, black and white whereas Feelers make decisions based on the care and concern for people and how they might be impacted because of the decision.

How do you order your world?

Judgers...lead a very organized timely closure oriented life style versus Perceivers who like to look at all of the options and leave things open ended until they have considered all of the possibilities.

Our MBTI Workshops are custom designed for your team and will help you to understand that there is value in having all parts of the spectrum represented on your team as your outcomes will be exponentially improved.

As a leader, you may find the workshop very insightful about how to engage all of your people to do their best work:

  • When you know their MBTI preferences...you are able to communicate to them so that they can hear you.
  • For instance, if a team member is Intuitive, you would want to give him or her the "big picture" of what your plan is first and then ask for what else he or she would like to know.  If you are detail oriented, this will be challenging, because you will want to make sure that all bases are covered.
  • Sending out an agenda in advance to your introverts will help them get clear about expectations for the meeting and give them plenty of time to reflect and be prepared to participate in discussions.
  • After experiencing the MBTI and reviewing the preferences of your team, you wil understand the value of having both sensors and intutitives in your brain storming sessions.  The intuitives will be able to come up with ideas until "the cows come home"...and wild and crazy ideas at that.  While the sensors will ground the intuitives with reality and also be inspired by some new thinking to get out of their box of "things are working pretty well the way they are."

MBTI WORKSHOPS can be designed to be part of a meeting or can be a one-half to full day stand alone workshop.  Please call 630-947-5389 today to discuss the possibility of using this tool with your team or contact us via email.
